Be Mindful of All or Nothing Thinking

Splitting is a psychological concept that describes the way people have a tendency to see things in terms of black and white. In splitting, you tend to see things as “all good” or “all bad.” Splitting is a defense mechanism that keeps you locked safely in your own belief systems without ever having to be challenged. After all, as long as any of us thinks in terms of absolutes, we don’t have to worry about getting lost in the complicated gray of life.

Splitting might seem helpful because it’s easy to do and when we do it, we don’t have to challenge ourselves, BUT, it will be difficult to grow if we’re locked into our either/or beliefs. Be mindful of all-or-nothing thinking, and remember: Just because we might want life to be black and white, that doesn’t mean it actually is.
