Making A Moment: Putting Others First

Most of us are familiar with the phrase, “take a moment,” but I wonder what might happen if we traded the first “t” in that phrase for an “m.”

A client recently shared me that she was upset that her husband did not find the time to “put her first.” Now, it’s been my experience that the phrase “put me first” can mean different things to different people, so I asked her, “What would putting you first look like?”

“Honestly, it would just entail him asking me about my day,” she replied.

From the outside, that doesn’t seem too arduous. Actually, even from the inside, I’m not sure it’s that difficult to do.

We all want to matter. Because we all want to matter, it takes a lot less effort to impact us (and subsequently, others) than we might guess. How long would it take that woman’s husband, for instance, to make a moment and ask her about her day?

We all create moments in our lives. Creating a moment entails putting effort into the moment, even if it seems effortless. By creating or making moments, we take the proverbial bull by the horns and take charge of our lives. In making a moment for others, we give of our time – and as we know, a little effort can go a long way.

For whom do you need to make a moment today?
